Jardines del Sol

Inhabiting between forest and ocean.

The place

Five hectares facing the Ecuadorian Pacific

A coastal forest of palms and mangroves. One hundred and seventy metres of open ocean. The stretch of Pacific closest to Quito — four hours from the capital, on the Cojimíes peninsula.

Engawa

In Japan there is a word for the space between the house and the garden

Not interior. Not exterior. A threshold.

Jardines del Sol imagines that threshold on the Ecuadorian Pacific: architecture that opens to gardens, shade and sea.

The vision

The place where we would want to live

This did not begin as a real-estate venture. It began as an intimate question: what place would we build for ourselves? A few houses among gardens. Shade and slowness. The ocean present, without becoming spectacle. A small community that cares for the landscape it inhabits.
